CONFERENCE SOCIAL FUNCTIONS

Fringe Dinner - Saturday 24 October

Opening Ceremony and Welcome Reception - Sunday 25 October

Adelaide Convention Centre 4:45 - 8:00pm
South Australian wines, delicious food and a lively jazz band are the catalysts for this function. It will include the Presidential Address, Awards and the Welcome Reception in the Exhibition Hall. Celebrate the opening of Adelaide 98 - Pathways to Knowledge, revive old friendships and make new ones.

Delegates must be seated by 4:45pm

First Timers Breakfast - Tuesday 27 October

Adelaide Convention Centre 7:30 - 8:45am
Cost: Delegates: $18 Student Delegates: $10

Take this opportunity to meet other first timers at this get together. Members of the South Australian Branch will be there to answer any questions relating to the Conference or to ALIA.

University of Adelaide Library drinks reception - Tuesday 27 October

Barr Smith Library Reading Room, University of Adelaide 6:30 - 7:30pm
The staff at the University of Adelaide Library invite delegates to the Barr Smith Library for pre-dinner drinks. Guests may enter through the Eastern Door, only opened on special occasions. Drinks will be served in the reading room, one of the most impressive in Australia.

Chew it over with a speaker! - Tuesday 27 October

As no Conference dinner will be held, we have organised instead an eclectic mosaic of culinary experiences.

Ten restaurants have been booked and speakers have been invited to attend the dinners. There will be no format speeches, but you will have the opportunity to meet a speaker and informally discuss issues of interest. Delegates and speakers will mingle informally. Places are limited. Price is for dinner only, buy your own drinks. To book your place at one of these dinners, please refer to the registration form.

Ambience: History, elegance and charm in one of Adelaide's National Trust treasures. Originally the home of Sir Henry Ayres.

Guest: John Shipp at Jolley's Boathouse, Jolley's Landing $50
Ambience: Glass frontage looks onto the River Torrens at the foot of King William Street bridge. Modern elegance, good food.

Guest: Jillian Dellit at Brasserie Irodori, 291 Rundle Street $30
Ambience: One of Adelaide's newest cafes in the trendy East End of Rundle Street. Excellent Japanese food.

Guest: Liz Ho at Red Ochre Grill, Ebenezer Place $40
Ambience: Recently relocated to the popular East End. Sparkling new polished surfaces. Very interesting and delicious food for those not averse to eating the native flora and fauna.

Guest: Mairéad Browne at Botanic Café, 4 East Terrace $40
Ambience: Another East End Café. Indoor/outdoor onto East Terrace and the parklands. Not your average Italian food.

Guest: Frances Slack at Alphutte, 242 Pulteney Street $40
Ambience: Swiss class in an Adelaide cityscape. Winner of numerous awards for excellent food and service.

Ambience: A banquet in one of Adelaide's charming Hutt Street residences, converted to an elegant Chinese restaurant.

Ambience: Downstairs on Hindmarsh Square. Rich furnishings, sumptuous aromas, luscious curries and lassi, gorgeous waiters.

A last opportunity to sample South Australia's excellent food and wine. Reflect on the Conference with delegates and speakers before your journey home.

Sunday 25 October

SF1 Local Studies Breakfast and Walk
See the historic beach-side suburb of Glenelg on foot with an expert tour guide. Travel to Glenelg by tram, and stay after the walk for an al fresco lunch on the lawns.

Monday 26 October

SF3 University, College and Research Libraries Section Cocktail Party

Adelaide is known and valued as a compact accessible city with a strong arts culture and The Jam Factory, Contemporary Craft & Design Inc., at 19 Morphett Street, provides a gallery for it's ongoing artistic expression. As Australia's unique, integrated organization for the design, production, display and sale of work by leading and emerging Australian craft designer-makers you will be provided with an opportunity to view and purchase at one of Adelaide's drawcards. And all this, just a hop and a jump from the conference venue!

Academics online: a nationwide quantitative study of Australian academic use of the internet (due out October 1998) / edited by Peter Clayton (editor of AARL, UCRLS's journal) will be launched at the event by Ray Choate, University Librarian, University of Adelaide.
