Bruce Maguire

Bruce Maguire is a blind person who successfully complained to Australia's Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission that the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games had unlawfully discriminated against him as a blind person, because of their failure and refusal to make the official Olympics website (http://www.olympics.com) fully accessible to him.

Title: Sharing The Vision Or Blinded By The Revolution

Abstract: One of the greatest challenges that I and other people who are blind face in our everyday lives is being able to gain full and independent access to information. Throughout history, the transformations that have occurred in the way knowledge is dispensed have had an impact on blind people. The paradigm shifts that are occurring today, as we are swept along by the information revolution, are having, and will have, an unprecedented impact on all of us, but especially on those people who have print disabilities. Email is making it easier than ever before for those of us who are blind to communicate with people. The Worldwide Web and electronic publishing are making more information available than ever before. However, these same technologies, as well as economic factors, have the potential to exclude blind people from mainstream society in a way that has never before been possible. If we are to avoid the creation of 'information ghettoes' we must develop and implement personal, organisational, and corporate strategies that are founded on principles of universal access, equality, independence, respect for human rights, and the value of all people, rather than on short-term expediency.
