neXt 2005: ALIA National Library and Information Technicians Conference

ALIA Acquisitions National and ASSIG Seminar New ways of publishing, printing and preservation: trade and library developments.

Papers presented at this seminar will cover the latest developments in the key areas of the production, publication and preservation of information resources as well as the delivery of this material to library users, based on the application of new technologies. The papers will inspire and inform library professionals across a broad sector to review and upgrade existing library operations with particular reference to the acquisition of information resources in the light of these new developments.

To be held 5 September 2005 at the Parliamentary Theatrette, Parliament House, Macquarie St, Sydney, 9:00-4:30pm. Registration from 8.30 am. Full rates: $88 ALIA members, $110 non-members , $66 student/concession [GST incl].

CATALOGUING E-RESOURCES
This course introduces participants to the specific guidelines for creating and editing bibliographic records and holding statements for electronic resources. It provides an overview of AACR2 and MARC21 as they apply to electronic resources, and utilises practical examples. It provides guidelines that apply to a range of electronic resources such as e-books, e-journals, databases and web sites.

OUTCOMES
On completion of this course, participants will:

  • understand the process for cataloguing a range of electronic resources
  • understand the MARC21 structure of electronic resources
  • be familiar with the Electronic Location and Access; MARC 856 field

WEB RESOURCES FOR CATALOGUERS
The Web abounds with resources that are useful to cataloguers, but so many of us do not have the time to find them. Concentrating on freely available web sites, this workshop covers cataloguing tools and library catalogues as well as dictionaries, directories, sites devoted to particular languages and those of learned societies, fan clubs, etc.

OUTCOMES
On completion of this course, participants will have:

  • a wider knowledge of the Internet, its development and possible future issues
  • the opportunity to explore new resources and to use familiar ones in new ways
  • a workbook that includes a brief history of the Web, a description of different types of search tools and methods, an appendix on Boolean searching and a comprehensive resources list for further reading
  • access to web pages comprising URLs that have been compiled specifically for each session

A good leader develops personal leadership skills and encourages and trains new leaders who will follow. This workshop examines the attributes of an effective leader and provides selfassessment tools that individuals can use to identify their potential leadership strengths and weaknesses.
