FEEDBACK COMPETITION - WE HAVE A WINNER!

Congratulations to Terri Pamment, from the Barr Smith Library, University of Adelaide! Terri has won a $30 voucher from UniBooks, just for filling out our NLS2 feedback form. Thanks to everyone who gave us feedback either online, via email or during the conference. We'll be passing all feedback onto the NLS3 committee to help them make the next Symposium even better!

Although the feedback competition has now closed, we will still welcome any useful comments or thoughts from NLS2 delegates who missed the competition deadline. The feedback form will still be available on the website for any delegates who would like to add to the feedback we have already received.

WINNERS OF LIFE COACHING PACKAGES

Over 40 NLS delegates chose to throw their hats in the ring and put in an application for the free Life Coaching Packages offered by Geraldine Barkworth of Bold Women, Big Ideas. The decision whom to shortlist and offer trials was very difficult as all applicants demonstrated worthwhile goals and issues they felt ready to turn from dreams into concrete reality. In the end, only three applicants could be chosen to receive the free package. The three chosen applicants are:

Cherie Shum, CiP Librarian, National Library of New Zealand
Vanessa Davidson, Children's Services Coordinator, City of Playford Libraries
Naomi Betridge, Library Assistant, Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia

Cherie, Vanessa and Naomi will receive receive 4 free 1 hour career and personal phone coaching sessions with Geraldine, valued at $320 per person. Congratulations to our lucky winners!

In addition, Geraldine was so impressed with the enthusiasm and commitment of ALL the applicants, she has kindly offered one complimentary coaching session to all the other applicants who fully completed the entry form! All of these lucky delegates will be contacted soon with more details. All applications and life coaching sessions are treated with the strictest confidence and with respect to your privacy.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR COMPETITION WINNER

Congratulations to Elizabeth Beales from the Barossa Council Public Library, who has won the Thomson Gale Competition for a FREE registration to NLS2. The competition asked entrants to describe in 25 words or less your best response to the comment: "Oh, it must be lovely to read books all day!"

Elizabeth's winning entry was: (to be said in the very best Carson from Queer Eye voice)
"Oh no, we've SO moved on from there. It's not just about books any more. We're into jzschuching your mind not just shushing your mouth."

Elizabeth will receive a free registration to the 2nd ALIA New Librarians' Symposium. This registration is sponsored by Thomson Gale. Thanks to our judge, ALIA Local Liaison Officer Lee Welch - and to everyone who entered !!

Over 100 entries were received, and other "Highly Commended" entries will be posted to the website soon. If you were not a winner, please complete your registration form as soon as possible to secure your place at the Symposium. Remember, early bird registrations close on October 1st, so get your registration form to ALIA National Office soon!

Competition Judge Lee Welch tells us why this entry was THE ONE:
Over 100 entries and no love lost for the banking industry in this competition, it seems. Many contestants chose to fight stereotype with stereotype, so my guess is that folks in banks must get as aggro as we do about being tarred with a sloppy image brush - something we tend not to think about when we're the ones in the firing line. Or perhaps we just all wish we really could roll around amongst the dollar bills - I know I do, pretty much every time I look in the letterbox.

But I digress. Amongst the outstanding contributions were references dear to my heart - champagne and clearing a dance floor amongst them. They were on my highly commended list. But our winner not only made me laugh out loud, this particular '25 words or less' seemed to me to sum up everything about breaking stereotypes with positive humour and considerable elegance. It's a classic one-liner with broad appeal, it makes use of a mass media phenomenon, and I can't wait to try it out at the next do I go to that's infested with anyone silly enough to put down a partying librarian on the loose.

So forget the Shhh, get out there and Tshushz - yeah, baby!

MOVING BEYOND THE STEREOTYPE - WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

The theme for the 2nd ALIA New Librarians Symposium is Beyond the Stereotype. Yes, the very word "stereotype" raises passions, both positive and negative, in the library community.

However, looking Beyond the Stereotype at NLS2 will give new professionals the opportunity to acknowledge, explore and move beyond the multiple stereotypes within our industry. "Stereotype" does not just include the "bun, glasses & cardigan" image of librarians, but encompasses the various public perceptions of librarians and libraries. The services we offer, the roles we play, the way we market ourselves, our relationship with IT and industry, the way we engage with the wider community - these are all areas where we are moving beyond traditional stereotypes of library and information service. These are significant issues that affect, involve and engage the new generation of library and information professionals. The New Librarians' Symposium 2: Beyond the Stereotype, will give emerging librarians an opportunity to explore how we might move beyond traditional concepts towards a changing and challenging future.

JOIN THE ALIA NEW GRADS GROUP!

The ALIA New Librarians' Symposium 2 will be the main event for 2004 http://www.alia.org.au/p://alia.org.au/groups.moreinfo.html?ID=58" class="linknew">ALIA New Graduates Group. The ALIA New Graduates Group provides a forum for new graduates to communicate and socialise with colleagues and build relationships and networks within the profession.

The ALIA NGG was formed after the New Librarians' Symposium 2002, when delegates identified the need for a national group for new graduates. The ALIA NGG will facilitate networking for the new generation of library professionals, provide a forum for the discussion of issues relevant to new professionals, organise meetings and training specifically relevant to students and new graduates and introduce new graduates into the wider ALIA community. It aims to ensure the long-term future of the Association (relevance and member participation), and to support and assist with the mentoring programme in each state.

Regional groups of the NGG are being formed around the country during 2004. Enthusiastic new librarians are getting together in cafes, pubs and bars to chat about libraries (among other things). For more info on what's happening in your state or territory, subscribe to the NGG e-list!
