All about the ALIA New Librarians' Symposium 2006
Welcome to the ALIA New Librarians' Symposium 2006! This is the fourth national event in Australia targeting the next generation of LIS professionals, and the growing popularity of the event shows the strength, energy and vitality of this movement. The next-gen LIS movement is an international one – in 2004 IFLA established the New Professionals Discussion Group, and the American Library Association has the New Members Round Table.
NLS as an event is an initiative of the ALIA New Graduates Policy and Advisory Group, and is driven by members of the ALIA New Graduates Group.
New graduates are actively sought as stakeholders in the current and future information profession, and while the first few symposia were about making our voice heard, the time has now come to ask “what should we be saying?”
At NLS2006 we hope to facilitate passionate debate on that topic. We have actively sought first-time presenters for breakout sessions, but have still ensured that opportunities for networking are not limited to our own group – here you will meet both “new grads” and “big wigs”.
The NLS2006 Committee speaks from, well, lack of experience. Most members of the committee are new to the industry, and even newer to conference organisation. Creating this event has been an extraordinary learning experience for all of us, and we cannot recommend it highly enough – if you are a new grad (or even an “old” grad) – GET INVOLVED! Congratulations on taking the first step, and we hope you have a fantastic time at NLS2006.
