NLS2006 News
30 November - WE WANT YOUR FEEDBACK!
When the NLS2006 Organising Committee were planning this event, the data from the feedback forms at NLS2 was invaluable. It helped us figure out which bits were vital to keep in the event, and which bits needed to be changed. Help us do the next organisers the same favour, by filling in our online feedback form. It won't take long, and it will ensure that the next New Librarians' Symposium will be even better than this one! Jump in here.

Nora Martin is a Research Librarian with Fairfax Research Library in Sydney. Nora submitted the following winning tip for conference attendance, and has won herself free registration for NLS2006, courtesy of the Information and Knowledge Management Program at the University of Technology, Sydney. Congratulations Nora, and we look forward to seeing you in December!
- Share the conference programme ahead of time with staff of your organisation/library
- Give them a list of sessions, workshop and any demonstrations you plan to attend
- Provide the conference web site to your organisation/library so they can see the depth and breadth of the what the conference has on offer
- Be prepared to explain the relevance of the information and solutions for your library or organisation as well as how much this training will cost
- Pick up handouts whenever offered. Further, take notes at conference sessions, so that you can share your experiences with your colleagues when you return
Closer to the event we'll have all the tips and tricks that were submitted available on our website, where you'll be able to prepare yourself for your time at NLS2006. Thank you to all that entered, and to UTS for supporting us!
See you in December!
7 September - NLS2006 Tips & Tricks Competition

This competition is kindly sponsored by the Information and Knowledge Management Program at the University of Technology, Sydney - to find out more about what UTS has to offer you, visit www.hss.uts.edu.au/departments/DIS/
What do I wear? What do I bring? If I'm not in charge of my library's budget, how do I talk to exhibitors? If it's boring, can I leave?
We're sure you won't need an answer to that last question (as if it'll be boring!), but given that 66% of delegates to the 2nd New Librarians' Symposium had never been to a conference before, those kinds of questions might be going through your head.
We've assembled a list of "Tips & Tricks" from the NLS2006 Organising Committee to help first timers (and perhaps even some old-timers) deal with their conference experience.
But really, we're novices too. So we'd love to hear from you. Do you have a tip or trick that you'd like to share with other delegates, perhaps something that was passed on to you, or you learnt from your own experience? What questions were you asking before your first conference?
We'll add your tips to our list on the NLS2006 website - but wait, there's more! Courtesy of the kind people at the Information and Knowledge Management Program at the University of Technology, Sydney, the author of the best tip and / or trick, as judged by the NLS2006 Organising Committee, will win free registration to NLS in December, and the chance to put that tip into practice.
Entries should be sent to newlibrarian2006@alia.org.au with the subject line "Tips & Tricks" by Friday 22nd September, and including your contact details. Winners will be announced the following week, and we'll endeavour to get all submissions on to the website as soon as we can. If you come up with a tip or trick to be added, but you've missed the competition closing date, you can still send it in to help your fellow delegates.
So get tipping!
4 August - Convince Your Boss. We have a winner!
The NLS2006 Organising Committee congratulates Kirsten Harte of Queensland, the winner of our Convince Your Boss Competition. Kirsten turned to poetry for her entry - we're not sure whether it's spoken or sung, but we love it either way:

"But I wanna!"
For some strange reason, that phrase just doesn't cut it when asking your boss to pay for conference attendance. But what does?
We're asking potential NLS2006 delegates to help each other in convincing their bosses that supporting NLS attendance is an investment with high returns.
Tell us, in 50 words or less, your best argument for why your work should support your attendance, and we'll put the entries on our website so others can take inspiration from you.
And guess what? In a nice little contradiction, we'll be awarding the author of the best argument with free registration to NLS2006 in December, freeing up your argument for blatant plagiarism by others without your boss ever having to know!
Submit your entries to newlibrarian2006@alia.org.au, with the subject line "Convince Your Boss", by 5pm Wednesday 16th August. All decent entries will go on our website (nothing inappropriate please - bribery is not an option!), and the winner, as voted by the NLS2006 Organising Committee, will be announced the following week.25 July - Call for reviewers

14 June - We have a winner!
Congratulations and thanks go to Jill Baker, Library & Intranet Manager at UrbisJHD in Melbourne. Jill was the first person to register for NLS2006, and thus the winner of the first of many competitions. Jill will hopefully be curled up in a big armchair, nice and warm inside when it's chilly out, enjoying her copy of The mobile library: the case of the missing books by Ian Sansom, kindly donated by HarperCollins Publishing Australia.
To get first dibs on upcoming competitions, be sure to sign up for our elist. We've got a few competitions planned that are exclusive to the list, so keep watching the skies...22 May - Win a copy of the "Mobile Library"
With registration opening on June 1st, we know you don't need any incentives to jump in as quickly as possible. But as a reward to the fastest gun we've got a copy of Ian Sansom's recent publication "The mobile library: the case of the missing books" to give away, courtesy of the generous folk at HarperCollins Publishers Australia. This is the story of Israel, a shy, quiet new librarian who finds himself responsible for finding the 15,000 books missing from his new library. For further details.
So get in quick! The first registration processed through the ALIA Shop will have a copy of this book raced to them in the mail to keep them amused over the upcoming long weekend. Ready, steady...12 May - Registration opening soon
Registrations for NLS2006 will be opening on the 1st June. Please note that accommodation needs to be booked seperately, directly with the hotels - you'll find a list of recommended ones (that have kindly offered us discounted rates) on the accommodation page.
