NLS4 Author at Conference & PD Events for Non Attendees

We at the NLS4 committee have been investigating a number of different approaches in making this event truly unique in the library and information industry. Now, we are excited to announce that the trade exhibition will feature an visit at Friday lunchtime from Children's and Young Adult writer, Sofie Laguna. Sofie's appearance is proudly supported by the University Co-op Bookshop.

And for those of you who aren't attending NLS4, but are going to be in Melbourne, here's an opportunity to take advantage of some of the sessions offered at the Professional Development Day program.

As PD Day is a little over a month away, we have decided to open up attendance to the following sessions, to the wider professional community. However, places are strictly limited – we're only doing this so that we can fill the remaining spaces – so get in quick!

"The Art of Influence: Essential Skills for Leaders" with Elaina Norlin

The Art of Influence Workshop is a must for anyone who is serious about enhancing their leadership and communication skills. Learn how to conquer your fear of public speaking and advance your career by becoming a more effective and compelling speaker. Participants identify which persuasion styles come most naturally and provide positive and ethnical steps to gain influence, credibility and confidence in your organization and/or during high level meetings. The workshop will also provide you with practical strategies to eliminate your fear or inexperience in public speaking and dramatically improve your speaking skills whether you are persuading, educating, or informing. The workshop will also provide practical skills for a more polished PowerPoint presentation that keeps your audience awake.

Date: Thursday, 4 December 2008

Time: 10.30am - 12.30pm

"Moving to a healthy workplace: questions to ask before saying Yes to a job." with Elaina Norlin.

With bullying and toxic workplaces on the rise there is a need to focus on improving workplace culture. Expert articles only talk about how to cope with bad behaviour. This workshop focuses on what candidates should know during screening and recruitment for management and director positions. The session will help participants recognise which questions you should be asking before taking that dream job.

Date: Thursday, 4 December 2008

Time: 2pm - 4pm

These sessions will be held at: RMIT Library, Seminar Room 1 Swanston Library, Building 8, Level 5, 360 Swanston St, Melbourne 3000

Cost: $30.00 each session for ALIA members and NLS4 delegates, $40.00 for non ALIA members.

To register your interest in either of these sessions, contact

Tania Barry - Convenor

But, as I said, be quick, because these sessions *will* fill up. $40 for a two-hour PD session with an international industry leader is an absolute bargain, so don't miss out – it's money well spent!

Pre-NLS4 social event in Melbourne

With so many information-savvy people coming to town for the 4th ALIA New Librarians' Symposium in December, the ALIA New Graduates Group Committee in Victoria, along with the ALIA New Generation Advisory Committee (NGAC) thought it would be remiss of them not to get in on the action somehow. We'd love to see as many delegates and the Victorian library community as we can, to get the Symposium started with a bang!

It's one of the first great things to do to break down barriers too.

Final exciting keynote for NLS4!

Greetings all

Now that the 4th ALIA New Librarian's Symposium is only 15 weeks away, it's time for those of you who haven't registered yet to give it some serious thought! Especially when the Early Bird Registration closes in two weeks, on the 5th of September! Register early and save money!

Here's some further incentive...

The City of Melbourne, host city for NLS4, has just been announced by UNESCO as a City of Literature. To put this in perspective, the only other City of Literature in the world is Edinburgh. This is a groundbreaking achievement for the literary industry in Australia, where libraries play a vital role. It's just another reason to come to Melbourne in December, and witness the cultural vibrancy that earns its reputation as one of the World's Most Liveable Cities.

Furthermore, we are thrilled to make our final keynote speaker announcement, completing an inspiring line-up of speakers...

MARK PESCE

Proudly supported by Swinburne University

Known internationally as the man who fused virtual reality with the World Wide Web to invent VRML, Mark Pesce is the author numerous articles and five books, including The Playful World: How Technology is Transforming our Imagination, and has written for such publication as WIRED, Salon, The Age, and ABC UNLEASHED. For the last four years, Pesce has been a panelist on the hit ABC show THE NEW INVENTORS.

From 2003 to 2006, Pesce chaired the Emerging Media and Interactive Design Program at the world-renowned Australian Film Television and Radio School. In 2006 he received an appointment as an Honorary Associate in the Digital Cultures Programme at the University of Sydney, providing expertise in "social media" and sharing.

Pesce practices "digital anthropology", studying how communities and individuals adapt to and adopt technologies, taking his studies into practice, founding FutureSt, a Sydney Media and Technology consultancy, with clients that include some of the largest NGOs, media companies, and educational organisations in Australia.

Don't miss the opportunity to see a pioneer and leading figure in the information industry, along with our other keynote speakers, and a host of emerging library professionals, in an exceptional program that will inspire and encourage you to go out there, unafraid of... Breaking Barriers.

Presenting a paper at NLS 4? Then this could be the event for you!

Presenting to an audience can be a challenging experience, so the ALIA New Graduates Group in Victoria is hosting an event on the topic. If you are going to be a (first-time) presenter at the New Librarian's Symposium this year, need to sharpen your skills for that your next presentation, or want to learn some new strategies, then come along to hear from two people in the know, and are ready and willing to share their insight and experiences with us!

Tania Barry is currently the Children's and Youth Services Co-ordinator at Wyndham Library, and presented at the last NLS in Sydney, but her "first time" was at the National Library and Information Technicians Conference in 2005. She has presented and refined her techniques more than a few times since then. Tania is also the Convenor of the 4th ALIA New Librarians Symposium.

Julia Leong recently joined RMIT University Library, and is currently acting as Staff Development Librarian. Immediately prior to joining RMIT, she was Information Services Librarian at the University of New England. Julia presented a workshop at the Library Technicians Conference in 2003 and conference papers at RAISS 2001, Library and Information Technicians Conference 2005 and at a Hong Kong conference on change management in academic libraries in 2007. There will be time after the presentations to ask questions or clarify issues.

A representative from the NLS4 Committee will also tantalise us with more NLS news and festivities.

So, join us on Tuesday 5th August, at the RMIT Swanston Library in Seminar Room 1.
Building 8, Level 5, 360 Swanston Street, Melbourne
Time: 5:45pm for a 6:00pm start, till approximately 7:30pm
Cost: $5.50 for ALIA Members (include your Membership No. in RSVP)
$7.40 for Non-Members

Please RSVP to danielg@elitenet.com.au by Friday 25 July. Places are limited.

Registration Opening Date and another Keynote Speaker Announcement

It's been a gruelling couple of months, securing a dynamic mix of keynote speakers and presentations, but we're almost there! We are currently at the point of confirming the last of our presenters at NLS4, so we can't *quite* release the program, but I can tell you that, personally, I'm itching to spill the beans anyway.

However, I can say that we will absolutely, positively, without a glimmer of doubt, be announcing our program and opening registrations next Wednesday 18th of June.

And so, to distract you from yet another deadline whizzing past, I'm very excited to announce another of our Keynote Speakers:

DR SHERMAN YOUNG

Some of you will have had the pleasure of seeing Sherman Young at Beyond the Hype: Web 2.0 in Brisbane earlier this year. Sherman is the Associate Dean of Teaching and Learning at the Division of Social Culture, Media and Philosophy. Prior to becoming an academic, Sherman worked in industrial design, publishing and running an award-winning multimedia production and design company.

Sherman blogs at Reconfigure and The Book is Dead which is a companion blog to his book, "The Book is Dead, Long Live the Book", published by UNSW Press. He is a founding member of the editorial board of Scan, an online journal of media arts and culture and an editorial reviewer for Hyperrhiz: New Media Cultures.

His current research project is Copyright Cultures involving qualitative and quantitative research into the attitudes of Australian musicians to the new technologies and their copyright implications.

We are extremely proud to acknowledge the generous support of RMIT University Library in sponsoring Sherman to present at the 4th ALIA New Librarian's Symposium, as an expert in the ways that culture is constantly being redefined in a dynamic, ever-changing information society.

Keynote Speaker Announcement

We, the committee of the 4th ALIA New Librarian's Symposium, realise that we'd promised to open our registrations on Monday 2nd of June. However, these plans have gone slightly awry, as best laid plans often do, and we are currently competing with the Australian Public Service to see how many hours we can work in a row around the clock.

However, to distract you from the deadline that just flew past our heads, I'm very excited to announce the first of our keynote speakers for NLS4:

ERIK BOEKESTEIJN & JAAP VAN DE GEER

Erik Boekesteijn and Jaap van de Geer both work for the DOK Library concept centre. Erik in the Communication and innovation Department and Jaap as head of IT. Erik's work includes marketing, promotion and innovation in many DOK Studio productions. Along with Jaap, Erik is also one of the founders of the UGame Ulearn project which promotes gaming in libraries on a national and international level. Jaap is responsible for the self invented unique ILS called ClienTrix, which recently integrated Google Book Search. Jaap works on the website of DOK and is cameraman and editor on many productions of the DOK Studio department.

In the lead up to Internet Librarian 2007 in Monterey, Erik and Jaap made a trip through America from Chicago to Monterey. During this trip they collected best practices of a number of pre-selected libraries, innovative ideas, web 2.0 tools and the motto of the 21st century librarian:

Make Stories, Tell Stories, Keep Stories

The result: Shanachietour

We are extremely proud to have the opportunity to present Erik and Jaap as international keynote speakers, and look forward to hearing all about their innovative work, breaking barriers in the library industry.

Many thanks to the sponsors of the Shanachietour Down Under – Yarra Plenty Regional Library Service, State Library of Victoria, Brisbane City Council, State Library of Queensland and Viclink.

Stay tuned, as we will shortly announce the program, and open registrations.

Announcing a *very* special social event ...

Greetings all, I trust that you have all recently had a vibrant and celebratory Library and Information Week, in one form or another.

But we have oh so much more to celebrate, for just around the corner, we have a multitude of exciting announcements to make, to coincide with the opening of registrations for the 4th ALIA New Librarian's Symposium.

We were literally inundated with abstracts for consideration for the program, and the committee has been (and still is) deliberating over the final line-up for our program, which will be announced shortly. Thank you to all of you, for making this task so difficult for us - it's going to be a truly fantastic program. But that's not the point of this email.

We're also in the process of finalising a number of very exciting and inspiring keynote speakers, who shall be revealed shortly. However, that's not the point of this email.

The point of this email is to announce what is arguably the highlight of every conference event - an opportunity to spend hours networking, schmoozing potential employers, or for busting a move on the dancefloor, and thus defying all the myths of librarian stereotypes. That's right, I'm talking about the conference dinner!

Now, you may remember the fabulous NLS2006 dinner at the Randwick Racecourse. Well, we couldn't resist the temptation to rise to the challenge of out-doing our Sydney colleagues (in a purely friendly interstate rivalry fashion), because we're in Melbourne, and being the sports capital of Australia, we have a reputation to uphold. So, I am incredibly excited to announce that the NLS4 conference dinner will be held at....THE MELBOURNE CRICKET GROUND!

That's right, the MCG, or the 'G' for those of you who prefer to use monosyllabic words. This venue is one of most iconic of Melbourne's many sports locations, and is also perfectly suited for classy receptions and dinner events. Located on the edge of Melbourne's CBD, near the banks of the Yarra River, the MCG s a short tram and is indeed the only venue in Melbourne that cab drivers know how to get to without needing directions, so you're guaranteed to get there on time. Whatever your code of football may be, the NLS4 dinner will prove to be an amazing way to see out the symposium, right up until that final siren blows!

Mark Saturday Night, 6th December as the date for your Melbourne experience at the "G".

So if you haven't yet considered coming to NLS4, start thinking about it right now! Registration opens shortly, and we'll be sure to let you know when it does!

State Library of Victoria as the Gold Sponsor for the event

The committee of the 4th ALIA New Librarians Symposium is proud to announce the State Library of Victoria as the Gold Sponsor for the event.

The State Library of Victoria has a long-standing history of support and partnership with ALIA, and we look forward to continuing this at the NLS4 in Melbourne this December.

Gold Sponsor - State Library of Victoria

Also, a reminder that NLS4 is currently calling for abstracts, so if you haven't yet considered presenting a paper, now is the time to start thinking – you still have over two months to get your submissions in! For more information on abstract submission, click here

1 year TO GO!

That's right, folks, the countdown (not to be confused with "The Final Countdown", which will occur later, possibly at the symposium dinner) has begun.

On this day in 2008, multitudes of delegates will be arriving at the Citiclub on Queen complex in Melbourne's CBD, for a truly career-defining experience. Will you be one of them? We received a wide range of interesting responses, from Julia Gillard to staff at the Middleton Interactive Learning Centre. However, we can announce that the winners were:

Winner: Laura Foley - Austin Health Library - Victoria

NLS4 has a venue confirmed and a Date set for 2008

The NLS4 Committee are incredibly excited to announce the venue for the 4th ALIA New Librarians Symposium – Citiclub on Queen.

CQ is a delightfully modern venue, located in the heart of Melbourne's CBD, and easily accessible by public transport. A stone's throw from all of Melbourne's major attractions, it is the perfect place to be in December 2008.

The CQ Functions centre provides ample space to accommodate concurrent sessions, with state-of-the-art presentation technology, so that we can truly break through those MS-Powerpoint barriers! Furthermore, the function space contains its own bar, if you need a little Dutch courage to spur you into networking with the industry's movers and shakers.

CQ also provides a range of comfortable inner-city hotel accommodation – details of accommodation deals for conference delegates will be confirmed as we draw closer to the event.

For more information about the venue, check out the venue

We're sure you'll be as excited as we are about this venue.

BTW - please put the 5th & 6th December 2008 in your diary, as the official Conference Dates

NLS4 competition - guess the patron

Whilst the whole of Australia (well, at least those who watch ABC on Wednesday evenings) is getting excited about The Librarians, we'd like to announce our patrons for the 4th ALIA New Librarians Symposium.

Well, we'd like to, but where's the fun in that?

Instead, we're giving you the opportunity to correctly guess who they are, and maybe win a prize!

But think carefully - you can only answer once! The first correct answer will win a very special prize, generously donated by the State Library of Victoria , but there are also a range of runner-up prizes.

Each week, we'll be posting another clue on the news feed, and you'll always see it first here, before anything is posted to the e-lists.

All entries must be in by midnight on Monday 3rd of December, and the winner will be announced on Wednesday 5th - exactly one year before NLS4 kicks off in Melbourne 2008.

Send all entries to: Gemma Siemensma - Social Program/Events Co-ordinator

AND...
Clue #1: "Both patrons for NLS4 are.... librarians."
Clue #2: "Neither of our two patrons are male."
Clue #3: Both are leaders in their organisations.
Final clue: "One of our patrons is somewhat stately in nature, whilst the other is more inclined to parley with her clients."

Website Launch

The NLS4 website was officially launched at the ALIA 70th birthday celebrations on the 20th of August 2007, hosted by the Victorian New Graduate's Group at the State Library of Victoria.

Full of teasers for next year's Symposium, this site will be regularly updated with new information about the New Librarian's Symposium as it becomes available.

Watch this space! Now you can subscribe to the RSS feed, and not worry about watching it – just let the information come to you!

And in breaking news, we are excited to announce that we have two (2) official patrons for next year's event. However, their identity shall remain a closely-guarded secret for the moment. That said, we all know that library workers are the biggest gossips, so feel free to speculate away.
