  Symposium Program

The Organising Committee are pleased to announce additional workshops and sessions for the exciting line up at the ALIA 5th New Librarians Symposium:

  Satellite Events

Open Forum Panel Discussion: Back To The Future

Date: Friday 16 September 2011
Time: 3:30pm - 5:00pm
Venue: Pan Pacific Perth

Open Forum Panel Discussion - a joint ALIA New Librarians' Symposium and ALIA National Library and Information Technicians Conference Event. The Organising Committee were excited to invite twenty eight industry leaders from the Western Australian Library and Information Community to a planning meeting to present and discuss the 'Back to the Future Forum’ - an event adjoining the two ALIA Perth 2011 Conferences. Twenty seven people accepted our invitation and enthusiastically embraced the idea and contributed to the discussion. The Committee has taken on board the suggestions from the planning meeting and highly anticipates the Forum will lead to some challenging and interesting discussion about the sustainability of the industry and our profession. A cross section of passionate ‘industry insiders’ from Australia and overseas have taken up the challenge and accepted our invitation to be on the panel. We are delighted to have the opportunity to challenge our speakers and engage our audience, to look at our future and the way forward for our libraries in a forever-changing information environment.

Delegates may register as part of the Conference Registration Process. Non-Delegates may register by downloading, completing & returning the Registration Form (PDF: 108kb)

In 2011, the State Library of Western Australia and the University of Melbourne will welcome the third intake into their graduate and cadetship programs. Both institutions would like to invite those interested to learn about their programs and discuss what it is that they expect from a graduate program, and what they want to get out of one. Is a graduate or cadetship program the best solution? Should a wider organisational focus or narrow specialised focus be taken? What do students or recent graduates want from a graduate or cadetship program? What do employers want from graduates or cadets?

This session will include:
  • Presentations on the experiences of library graduate and cadetship program participants and organisers from two different institutions.
  • A discussion and Q & A session with program participants and organisers.
  • Advice on how to gain a place in a graduate or cadetship program.
  • Advice on how to develop a graduate or cadetship program in your organisation.
  • Brainstorming activity: share your ideas on the ultimate cadetship or graduate program.

Introducing the Library Tours!

We know that some of you will be spending a few extra days here in Perth either before or after NLS5. And like many keen librarians who visit other cities, we tend to try and visit a few libraries during our travels to gather ideas to take home.

With this in mind, two tour options have been devised:

Registered tours:
On Friday 16th September, two Perth metropolitan libraries will be offering formal tours of their site. Registration for these tours will be required, and can be done at with your symposium registration. Details regarding the tours are as follows:

TAFE Library   Tour One: Central Institute of Technology Library - 25 Aberdeen St Perth

http://www.central.wa.edu.au/library/Pages/default.aspx

The new Library has been designed to best respond to the needs of todays learners by bringing together various elements of Library, elearning, audio visual, and information technologies into the one environment. The facility includes 150 pcs and Macs, wireless technology, multi-media booths, group study rooms, training rooms, and an assessment centre in addition to individual & group reading areas, book stacks and staff accommodation. This Library has also implemented RFID.

Visually the Library explores the relationship between the indigenous natural environment and the local mining industry in Western Australia, both aspects of which are represented within the building. Stratified open cut mines, precious metals, turtle shells, blackened sticks, metal mining bridges, black and white striped shadows in the atria, termite mounds in the red desert serve as a rich visual and programmatic narrative to inform the aesthetics of the building. The mining engineering cultures are loosely represented with the industrially scaled blackened pipe structural columns ‘propping’ the overhanging building and glazed wall.
