bullet point Finding Answers to Clinical Questions: A Seminar for Librarians (including full details of the NICS Clinical Evidence Researcher Service (CER) Study)

Brief description of content: based on the evidence gained from a 14 month research project about an innovative Clinical Evidence Researcher service, the seminar focuses on the practical skills associated with the role of CML in finding answers to clinical questions, as well as some of the issues relating to the implementation of such a service in other settings.

Brief description of content: Participants will learn how to demonstrate familiarity with hand-held computers (personal digital assistants, or PDAs) and identify a range of uses for PDAs in clinical and library settings; and will take away a list of sources of further information about PDAs. Participants will work with both Palm and PC operating systems. Yes - you get to work with them!
Note: This is a hands-on workshop, places are limited to sixteen.

Brief description of content: This course will focus on database indexing (for electronic information services and online databases) with a small amount of discussion on the options available for indexing Web sites. The course will describe various types of electronic indexing and provide practical exercises in bibliographic description, abstract writing and the use of thesauri.

bullet point MeSH and The Health and Ageing Thesaurus
Presenters: Sandra Henderson, Manager, Research, Coordination Support Branch, National Library of Australia; and Prue Deacon, HealthInsite, Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing.

Brief description of content: This course will focus on the use of MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) for database indexing. MeSH is one of the world's best examples of a hierarchical thesaurus. The course will show how to access it and how to find the right terms for medical indexing. There will be some discussion of a related thesaurus, The Health and Ageing Thesaurus, which is used in Australia for subject cataloguing and indexing health material.
